A Canadian sporting goods retailer said the cost of baseball bats from the United States has jumped 50 per cent after Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on Sept. 8.

Mark Macaulay, head of procurement at Home Run Sports in Winnipeg, said the tariffs raise his cost on bats from Louisiana and Pennsylvania by 50 per cent compared with before Sept. 8, 2026. [^2]

The tariffs came after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent duties on $28 billion in Canadian goods in mid-August 2026, after Canada-U.S. trade talks collapsed. The U.S. duties cover hockey equipment, golf and gym equipment, and fishing rods and parts. [^1]

Canada's retaliatory tariffs, implemented Sept. 8, also target several categories of sporting goods, including track suits, ski suits and swimwear, golf equipment, and fishing rods. [^3]
