The Arsenal manager says last season's Premier League triumph counts for nothing as the club begin their bid to retain the title they waited 22 years to win.

Mikel Arteta has told his Arsenal players they must start from scratch as they look to retain the Premier League title.[^1]

Arsenal ended a 22-year wait to win the English top flight last season, and bookmakers have already installed them as favourites to win it again.[^2]

Arteta's message, stripped of ceremony, is that none of that counts now. The read here is that a manager who knows how quickly momentum curdles is cutting off any temptation to coast on what has already been done.

Arsenal carry that favourites tag into the new campaign. Whether it sits as motivation or as weight is the question worth watching.[^3]
